How do cells get energy?
All cells perform respiration to produce ATP molecules which are used to power their life processes. There are different types of respiration. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen and can release 36 ATP molecules for each glucose molecule used. Anaerobic respiration does not use oxygen and can only release 2 ATP molecules for each glucose molecule used. The two types of anaerobic respiration are alcoholic fermentation and lactic acid fermentation. In eukaryotic cells, respiration happens in the mitochondria.
Plants and other organisms with chloroplasts produce their own sugar while other organisms must consume (eat) other organisms.
